“Be a Stiletto in a Room Full of Flats”
I stumbled across this Be a Stiletto quote (not sure who the original author is) but I felt this was a powerful quote that could apply in many different areas. But today I want to talk about it in reference to physical height and discuss some of the shops that carry tall sizes so that every tall woman can be confident in being a “STILETTO in room full of flats!”
The meaning of this Be a Stiletto quote is to stand out in a crowd. When you are 5’10” or above, we tend to do this quite naturally, don’t we?! So many people would like to be tall, but probably did even know that tall people, at one time or another, had deal with their own insecurities of their height. Cindy long legs, burnt toothpick, giraffe, scarecrow, sticks, beanpole, Cindy the beanstalk…. I could go on with the various names I was called when I was younger and as an adult. When I was I school, it bothered me until I heard the next new name I was called… a GLAMAZON! (Glamourous + Amazon (giant) = Glamazon)
This new name changed it all for me! And I began to embrace my height and look at it on a more positive light! Then there was the clothes – more particularly pants. ” Oohhh Cindy is floodin’!! Look at those high water pants! HAHAHA” Some of you are probably nodding your head because you probably heard the same comments too. Pants that are not long enough. When I was in elementary and middle school in the 90s, there were hardly any stores that carried long inseams. I remember going to the store with my mom and asking if they carried long inseams and the lady says “Oh yeah, we sure do!” Goes to the back and brings me a 34″ inseam flared pants! LOL LOL! 34″ inch inseam barely hit my ankle!! We bought it anyways and then this became my new best friend…
Yep, a seam ripper!!It didn’t matter how small those hems of my jeans may have looked! In my mind, EVERY MILLIMETER of fabric made a difference! I let out all my hems! Then at 14 years old, I discovered the online company that saved my life and I still shop there today. ALLOY APPAREL! 37″inseam!!! I couldn’t believe it! Not only were they long and carried good brands, they had stretchy jeans which when you are skinny meant no more saggy booty in the back! 🙂 Today Alloy’s style is not only targeting teens but for adults too. Also their inseam goes up to 39″! They consistently have sales and coupons so sign up for their emails. In addition to jeans, they have longer lengths in maxi dresses, skirts, tops and extended shoes sizes up to size 13!

Below is a list of stores that sell longer inseams that you may not have heard of or knew carried long sizes! Also a blogger friend Tall Fashion Adventure has a great post where she lists all the tall stores by country. I know some of my followers are not in the US and not all stores provide international shipping so definitely check her out for an extensive list at this link here! In addition, being tall also means needing to find extended shoe sizes. I find plenty of size 10 & 11s on JustFab, Target and instagramer Amanda with Bigfeet34 keeps a running page of sizes 10 and up. For my UK followers, check out Tall Girls for extended shoe sizes too! I hope you find these lists helpful!

One thing I wanted to mention is this hashtag that us tall folks like to use. #tallgirlproblem. I was thinking about this awhile ago and I feel that it gives a more negative connotation. And it s probably not encouraging to those who may still be struggling with embracing their height. So I want to stop using this hashtag and replace it with #tallgirlsituation! As tall women, we are always presented with different situations, BUT we find ways to deal with them or how I like to say- we find ways to “WERK it out” and continue to move forward. I feel the word situation sounds less negative than the word problem.
We are faced with the situation of sleeves not being long enough, so we roll them up. Oh look! Its now a fashion trend/style called 3/4 length sleeves! 🙂 We are faced with the situation where we can find a long enough inseam so we may make a small cuff in the pant leg or just wear them with a pair of heels. Oh look! It’s now fashion trend/style called boyfriend jeans, crops, capris & ankle pants! 🙂 I truly believe that all of our #tallgirlsituations have started many fashion trends. So as Jesse Queen’s positive motto goes “TALL WOMEN dress well BECAUSE of their height, not IN SPITE of it!” Remember, you too are a GLAMAZON so be proud to be a STILETTO in a room full of flats!
As a petite gal, I have the completeeee opposite problem. Instead of letting out seams, I always have to create a new one! A great store for petites AND tall gals is Asos; they have a line for both! Hugs, Kait

Oh yes, I have some petite friends who shared with my their struggles too. It can be a challenge. I believe Alloy also carry shorter inseams. ASOS is great too! I have not actually ordered from them yet but will soon. I loved the how my blogger friend Tall Fashion Adventure organized her list and we know alot of the same stores. So instead of created another list, I have put a link in this post to check out hers and just added a few of my favorites and others that is not on her list! Lots of love! :*
Fellow tall girl here! I played college basketball, and most of my friends ranged from my 5’10” to 6’3″-we were quite a bunch when out on the town lol.
I’ve never used a seam ripper before-but that’s a great idea to get some more length! I’ve actually had a lot of success with Banana Republic’s tall sizes. But i did not know Target sold tall! Definitely need to check that out-thanks for the tip!

Hello Glamazon!! Yes, that seam ripper was my BFF in junior high! I laugh because sometimes i only got maybe 1 cm of length but for me it was a bigger deal – just a little bit closer to reaching the ground! Yeah, I stumbled the long lengths at target by chance! They had some cute jeans too!

Great post, Cindy! I’m not super tall, in fact, I’m only 5’5″, but I’ve always had a problem with high waters. I have a shorter torso and longer legs, so I can relate with the pant inseam and I’ve always shopped wherever they would offer longer inseams. Keep embracing your height! xo ~Anna http://www.pepperedinstyle.com
I’m sure the petite struggle is real!! t must be hard finding the perfect clothing that fit right. Also – I hope your trip to Italy was amazing! I loved following along on Instagram. You look incredibly chic in these photos and it sounds like you had a wonderful time! I’ve always wanted to go to a coastal town in Italy, it looks so dreamy.

I can definitely relate to some of the experiences you had growing up. I was teased a bit as well as a child but I always thought to myself “Hmmm…they must just be jealous”. My life saver for shoes was Nordstrom. My family didn’t have a lot of money but, every now and again, my mom would take me there to look for shoes and they actually had OPTIONS in my size to try on. It was very exciting. Thanks for sharing your experiences, fav tall shops and also the new positive hashtag you’ll be using. And also thanks for the shout out! xo

Hey sweet Beth! Thanks so much for the note! Yeah my family did have a lot of money either. I remember they bought me buckle jeans and i wore those out because they could not afford another pair! You are most welcome for the shout out! I was like why make a new list when someone already did a great job on theirs!

I love this because I can relate! I am 5’8″ and my husband is 6’4″ so we are looked at as the tall couple amongst all my friends lol. I love all of these clothing suggestions! Awesome post! I’m going to start using that hashtag lol

Yes, I can definitely relate! My husband is almost 6’2″ and I am 5’11 and I am usually in heels! My sister is tall too so people would nickname us Twin Towers! yes, lets use the hashtag #tallgirlsituations. I just felt that using tallgirlproblems made it seem that it sucked being tall.

Be a stiletto in a room full of heels- i definitely think i need to seal that quote- too cute! I can relate to your story too. I am 5’7 and have been since about 9th grade. I grew really tall one year and felt like a monster next to my petite 5 foot nothing friends. Today I love being tall. My husband is 6’2 and I rock heels all day long! XO, Tara
